چکیده

Abstract The General Beale Pilot Project serves as a case study for the use of areawide monitoring and treatment programs glassy-winged sharpshooter (GWSS), Homalodisca vitripennis (Germar), roguing grapevines infected with Xylella fastidiosa, to achieve regional management Pierce’s disease. is located in southeast Kern County, CA, contains ~2,800 ha citrus grown within approximately 50 km2. For nearly 20 yr, an average 470 traps have been used monitor GWSS populations regionally by California Department Food Agriculture, inform coordinated, treatments USDA-APHIS Areawide Treatment Program overwintering citrus. Grape growers were responsible treating their own vineyards, based on surveys provided University California. Herein, we provide history Project, broken down into six eras levels success, which incorporate data captures, pesticide use, disease incidence. We describe patterns success related coordination effective that can be grape neighboring conclude describing current future challenges management, including availability resistance, refuges, inability detect rogue vines year they become infected, sustainability voluntary rely public funding.

Structure of female genitalia of glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca coagulata (Say) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae).

The functional reproductive morphology of the female glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca coagulata (Say), is described at both light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy levels. The female has nine abdominal segments; the seventh to the ninth abdominal segments are modified for reproduction; the eighth tergite is reduced to two segments, with the ovipositor partially exposed from the...

Sequential sampling plans for estimating density of glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca vitripennis (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) on citrus

The glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca vitripennis (Germar), is a serious pest of grapes and other crop and ornamental plants mainly through its role as a vector of the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa Wells. Citrus harbors large populations of this insect throughout much of the year in areas where the pest is problematic and improved understanding of the population dynamics and management of ...

Host plant effects on development and reproduction of the glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca vitripennis (Homoptera: Cicadellidae).

Development, survivorship, longevity, reproduction, and life table parameters of the glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca vitripennis (Germar), were examined in the laboratory using three host plants, sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), Chrysanthemum morifolium L., and euonymus (Euonymus japonica Thurb.). Females deposited similar-sized egg masses on all three plants. Hatching was highest with...

Distribution and management of citrus in California: implications for management of glassy-winged sharpshooter.

The epidemiology of Pierce's disease of grape (Vitis spp.) in California has changed over the past 10 yr due to the introduction of an exotic vector, Homalodisca vitripennis (Germar), the glassy-winged sharpshooter. Although this insect is highly polyphagous, citrus (Citrus spp.) is considered a preferred host and proximity to citrus has been implicated as a significant risk factor in recent ep...

Identifying Key Predators of the Various Glassy - Winged Sharpshooter Lifestages

Using glassy-winged sharpshooter (GWSS) egg-specific monoclonal antibody (MAb) and GWSS-specific genetic markers that we previously developed and optimized, the guts of field-collected predators were screened for the presence of GWSS remains. We have examined the guts of over 700 generalist predators and our analyses revealed that frequent predators of the GWSS include spiders, assassin bugs, l...
